Israel in Egypt a Resounding Success

By | 17th May 2017

Jubilo’s presentation, with the Edinburgh Players, of Handel’s “Israel in Egypt” was extremely well received by an attentive audience at St Cuthbert’s Church. The performance was enhanced by the contributions of soloists Emma Versteeg, Florence Russell, Catherine Backhouse, Stuart Mitchell, Phil Gault and Hugh Hillyard Parker. Handel’s masterful and dramatic representation of the plagues that precipitated the release of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt and the subsequent destruction of the Egyptians in the Red Sea gave choir, soloists and orchestra plenty of opportunity to display their vocal and instrumental versatility, dynamic control and overall musicality and this they did with great enthusiasm. The evening’s success was due in no small measure to Libby Crabtree’s sensitive direction from the rostrum. A tour de force by all concerned.
