History

Jubilo was formed in 1981 by some forty friends who had sung together in the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group. Walter Thomson was instrumental in creating the musical style of the choir and remained its Musical Director for 35 years, retiring in the Spring of 2016. Under Walter’s direction, the choir grew in numbers and in musical capability, enabling it to perform many major works. Go to the Concerts page for more information about recent concerts.

The Choir Today

Libby Crabtree is the choir’s Musical Director. Libby has a wealth of vocal and teaching experience, having sung with many professional choral groups and having been head of Junior School music at Edinburgh Academy. She is now building on the choir’s extensive repertoire with exciting and varied new music.

Organisation

The choir is run by an elected committee of members which is responsible for all administrative and financial aspects of the choir’s operation. Many other choir members are involved in helping make sure rehearsals, concerts and social events run smoothly. The choir’s Musical Director has the final say on all musical content, rehearsal and presentation.

Funding

Jubilo is entirely self-funding.

Choir members pay an annual subscription and are also committed to purchasing a number of tickets for the two main concerts of the year. Go to the Membership page for more information.

Music

All music is provided free of charge. The choir owns a large library of choral music and borrows or hires other pieces as required.

Most of the music in the choir’s library is available for hire to other choral groups.
